 The Swiss academic year and degrees


Is divided into two semesters: the winter semester begins the last week in October and runs until mid-February; the summer semester runs from mid-March or mid-April through to mid-June or mid-July, depending on the university.


The total length of study up to the first academic diploma is generally 4 to 5 years, depending on the program, and 6 years for medical studies. However, given the number of students currently enrolled, it is almost impossible to get enrolled in the faculties of medicine and pharmacy.


Swiss academic degrees are the Licentiate, the Diploma and the PhD. The Licentiate and the Diploma correspond to the American Masters degrees. As a general rule, most Swiss universities ask for a Licentiate, or even a Diploma, as a prerequisite for higher education


Pre-dominantly three languages are spoken in Switzerland: German, French and Italian. There are 12 universities in Switzerland and depending on where they are located, the language of instruction varies. Having said that, in the recent years, there is a conscious effort to attract students who are English language speakers. Knowledge of German and French is recommended, It should also be remembered that students are likely to find maximum programmes at Masters level taught in English.

  • Passing the English test parameters, sometimes the universities accepted the already prevailing tests and in a borderline case, the student has to appear for the universities own test. IELTS and TOEFL are also considered
  • Swiss universities have different parameters for students of different countries.
  • The minimum marks as per different countries

  • University entrance exam

  • Fulfilling minimum English language requirements through IELTS & TOEFL

Tuition Fee


Students have to pay a fee ranging from 16,000/year to 24,000 SFr/year

 

Several types of scholarships are offered by Swiss universities, whereas private schools have their own criteria. Loans are easily at a students disposal for studying in Switzerland.


The living cost for students range between 500 – 1500 SFr/ month. The assumption includes their living, clothing, Fooding and living styles. There are options of dormitories, flats, shared appointments etc. to make to life easier for a struggling student.

 

Undergraduate courses –  Bachelor’s Degree – 3 years
A bachelor's degree is awarded on completion of 180 ECTS credits  
Postgraduate course -        MS and Masters take around 1 and a half-2 years
On completion of 90 – 120 ECTS credits Masters degree is awarded

 

Doctorate – Every university has a different criterion for admission into the doctoral program but mostly it depends on the letter written by the student to the university.


There are also advanced master courses offered by various universities which awards an MAS degree on completion of 60 ECTS credits. This is a 1 year course


The intake months where the entrance exams are scheduled are generally for two semesters, September and January.
